Campaña por la Descriminalización de las Personas Usuarias de Drogas en Bolivia

Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia 2019

Leading Organisation: Acción Andina – Bolivia; Programa Libertas

Secondary Organisation: Hablemos Bolivia; Comunidad Cannábica Boliviana (national + Santa Cruz)

Our activities started 30 days prior to the Global Day of Action with:

1.  A seminar organised in conjunction with the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés, on human rights under drug policy, in which the Program Libertas presented an exhibition on the need for alternative approaches, such as harm reduction, to address problems arising from drug use.

The following activities took place the week of June 26:

2. Printing and dissemination of the following information leaflets: a) Diptych of the campaign for the decriminalisation of people who use drugs in Bolivia, b) A guide to understanding the problematic use of drugs from scientific evidence, c) An explanatory brochure on strategic litigation aimed at guaranteeing the rights of people who use drugs. These materials were disseminated in academic facilities, in the criminal system, and among organised sectors of society.

3. Printing and dissemination on social media of the pre-publication “La Justicia del dungeon “from the testimonial book” Dark Night: Secret Stories”, written by a young man with problematic use of drugs, which questions politics from his experiences in the world of drugs and prisons.

4. Dissemination of Support. Don’t Punish campaign messages, and banners prepared for June 26, both through social media and having street contact with people from different social sectors, or with people belonging to organisations.

5. Following the activities carried out on the Global Day of Action, we prioritise the following: a) Give impetus to the study on patterns of drug use at the national level in coordination with the Bolivian Cannabis Community – Santa Cruz, b) Start preparation of a threshold proposal, which aims to reduce criminal prosecution of people who use drugs, and c) Introduce harm reduction from pilot programs aimed at social groups who are marginalised and have problematic use of drugs.
