Support. Don’t Punish: É de Lei Community Center launches video manifesto on incarceration and harm reduction

Event will include the presentation of the Survivors Project and a harm reduction action at Sé square

Next Sunday, 26th, the É de Lei Community Center will launch the video-manifesto of the Survivors Project, about incarceration, drug policy and harm reduction. The event, which starts at 2pm at the headquarters of the organization (rua do Carmo, 56 – Sé), will be celebrated on the day of the campaign “Support. Don’t Punish”, an initiative that aims to put harm reduction on the global political agenda.

The Survivors Project, supported by the Brazil Human Rights Fund, was carried out between 2021 and 2022, with the aim of fostering the autonomy and rights training of prison survivors from the perspective of harm reduction. The meetings promoted in eight months of the project resulted in the video-manifesto, which gathers the demands of the participants.

É de Lei is an organization that has been working for over 20 years with harm reduction related to drug policy. By understanding that incarceration is one more of the vulnerabilities that mainly black, poor and LGBTQIAP+ people face during their lives and its relationship with the current “war on drugs”, É de Lei holds the event to present the demands of those who feel in their own skin the consequences of this war, which is materialised in the genocide of these bodies.

The date, June 26th, is also known as “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking”. Therefore, the campaign “Support. Don’t Punish” seeks to confront the narrative of this war on people, promoting harm reduction as a strategy of care and confrontation to racist, classist, sexist and prohibitionist policies.

The event will also include a call for action for harm reduction with the delivery of water and drug-related supplies, which will be held at the Sé square, as well as rapid tests for screening and diagnosis of priority populations for hepatitis B and C, as part of health promotion activities.
