In Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania, Medicins du Monde (MdM) and the Tanzanian Network of People who Use Drugs (TaNPUD) organised a large-scale event with music, speeches and banners.
There was a strong media presence at the event, with activists even invited to present in Parliament. Key advocacy messages were read out in Swahili and English calling on the government to support harm reduction and stop the criminalisation of people who use drugs.
In the words of Susan Masanja, Coordinator of TaNPUD, “The media coverage and the attention we received were important… we feel that we have initiated something of a conversation and awareness about these issues that was not really there before”.
